Why should I rent a bike in Makawao?

Maui-Road-Bike-RentalMaui’s roads are rideable year round. Yes, it does get chilly when you ride up to the Haleakala summit, but that’s to be expected–the summit is more than 10,000 feet. There are many other routes other than just riding up the summit. A favorite route is the 65-mile west Maui loop. There’s plenty of climbing, spectacular views, and one-lane roads. Maui’s towns are partially connected by multi-use pathways and Makawao is the hub of upcountry. There’s a path that connects Kahului with Kihei and another path that links Kahului to Paia (almost). There are also many bike lanes and designated bike routes throughout the island.

Another positive aspect of renting a road bike is that posted speed limits for automobiles on most roadways are about 35 mph. The speed limit is very rarely posted above 45mph here on island. And, because the topography isn’t really a straight line on Maui, it isn’t very safe to go faster than the posted speed limit!
